Safety on Campus
Duke University is a very safe place to be.Campus officials and student groups work continually and in tandem to maintain and improve safety on and around campus. There are a number of security measures in place, including Duke Police patrols, an extensive emergency warning systems, Safe Ride options, more than 500 “Help” phones around campus that dial directly to Duke Police, and a variety of other measures, all design to enhance student safety.

In addition, students can take an active role in their own safety by learning safety dos and don’ts, by attending safety presentations, and by understanding and accessing the variety of safety resources available to them.
Personal safety resources.
It is important to note that Duke is an open campus and part of the community. Community outreach and engagement are essential to who we are and what we teach as a university. Safety is also part of that equation.
At Duke, we work to keep students informed about safety concerns on and around campus and in areas frequented by students; give students tools they can use to improve their personal safety; and provide a significant security infrastructure. While there is no safety strategy that will work 100 percent of the time, we are confident that the safety and security structure we have in place is highly effective at minimizing dangers. And we are constantly considering new ideas to increase safety for our students, and for everyone on and around campus.
We encourage all students, faculty, staff, and parents to review the materials and links available on these pages. Your voice, your opinion, and your safety matter to us. Please contact either Duke Police or Student Affairs with additional questions or concerns.
