Work Schedule: M-F, 8:00am-5:00pm; During peak recruiting season, long hours and some weekend work is required.
Nature of Responsibilities
The Assistant Director will share with staff the design and delivery of career counseling and services to graduate and undergraduate students, alumni and employers with the goal of connecting these important constituents for mutual benefit. As part of the comprehensive Duke Career Center team, this role has responsibility for engaging students in the career development process and developing relationships both internally and externally to connect Duke students to opportunities. Working in a team-based environment, the Assistant Director provides leadership, career education and counseling, coaching, and acts as a resource through active participation on cross-functional teams.Specific Duties
-Engage students and alumni in the career development process through; effective self-exploration, information gathering, and the development of critical job search skills.-Provide career assistance to undergraduate and graduate students, and alumni of all disciplines and areas of interest.
-Lead career counseling and staff information sharing specific to the business industry.
-Coordinate staff training sessions to inform staff of current trends, issues, and information as it relates to the business industry and needs of students interested in this specific industry.
-Facilitate career decision making for students and alumni and enhance decision making processes through on-going counseling that includes; self-explorations, evaluation of skills, interests, values, experiential and career planning, utilization of assessment tools, and use of traditional and web-based career resources.
-Work with students and alumni on specific career development skills in preparing for networking, experiential and full-time opportunities through resume assistance, interviewing techniques and job search strategies.
-Develop relationships and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to build positive and productive relationships in support of the preparation for professional development.
-Participate in the development of a core curriculum for The Career Center related to the career development needs of Duke students and alumni.
Programming:
-Develop and implement programming including workshops, industry specific panels and presentations on career education topics targeted to the business industry.
-Support the Career Center staff in developing and implementing programming to support the career curriculum.
- Participate in the development and presentation of general Career Center programs.
Employer Relations Development:
-Identify potential employers for Duke students and alumni to include all industries but with a focus on the business industry.
Maintain and enhance strong, positive relationships with employers, alumni, staff, and faculty to develop experiential and full-time opportunities.
-Collaborate with the Employer Relations team to build relationships in support of the preparation of students and alumni for an internship or other experiential experience or career in a specific industry or job function.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s Degree and at least two years of experience in career development, human resources, higher education, recruitment, or related field. Strong interest and ability in individual and group career counseling with students, Extensive knowledge of the work world and the ability to build professional relationships with alumni, employers, colleagues, faculty and staff is required.Specific Skills and Competencies
Successful candidates will possess: Demonstrated or related experience in individual and group career counseling with students/alumni; experience developing initiatives and implementing programs designed to encourage student learning; the ability to build cooperative and collaborative working relationships with a wide range of constituents; the ability to work in teams, familiarity with assessment instruments; facilitation/training/teaching skills. Successful candidates will also be innovative, creative, and effective problem solvers.Application Instructions
