Work Schedule: Normal business hours 8am-5pm, M-F. Longer hours including some weekend work are required during peak recruiting season. Some travel also required.


Nature of Responsibilities

The Assistant Director for Graduate Student Career Services and External Relations serves in a dual-role.  ½ time is spent providing career counseling, programs and related activities for Master's and PhD students enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering. ½ time is spent in the cultivation external relations with employers, alumni and other constituents towards the expansion of career opportunities for graduate students. This work will include helping those seeking both academic as well as alternative professional employment.  On occasion the Assistant Director will meet with undergraduates interested in pursuing graduate degrees leading to academic careers.  This position reports to the Executive Director with additional oversight from the Associate Director.  

Specific Duties

1)    Career counseling and professional development services individually and in small groups to help graduate students assess their situations and develop action plans.
2)    Support in the management and facilitation of external relationship management across Alumni, Faculty, Employers, and other departments.
3)    Work with employers to be effective in the recruiting of Duke graduate students served by the Career Center.  Provide support for the development and implementation of campus recruiting strategies to include both process and the expansion of revenue generating opportunities.
4)    Assist graduate students to understand career decision-making processes, acquire employability and job-search skills, and examine life-work roles and goals.
5)    Develop and implement programs that address the career development needs of graduate students with a focus on career exploration, experiential learning, employment or a similar program area.
6)    Foster linkages with faculty and academic deans in specific academic disciplines.
7)    Keep abreast of career and labor market information available through various resources.
8)    Represent the Career Development Office on University and professional associations committees and/or by presenting programs at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate.
9)    Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
10)    Train and supervise work of lower level employees, students and volunteers as assigned.
11)    Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Requirements

PhD preferred but not required.  Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Human Resources, or related field. Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in career development, recruitment, or related field. Knowledge of academia, the work world and employment, particularly the hiring of graduate students is essential.  Understanding of higher education and the career needs of students at highly selective institutions.

f)    Ability to gather and manage data, and to present such information in person, at workshops and in reports
g)    Sound judgment, team management, communication and interpersonal skills
This position requires particularly long hours during the some parts of the academic year and the willingness to travel.
