Nature of Responsibilities

Responsible for the design and implementation of web-based systems and services within the Division of Student Affairs including technology implementations of web projects such as creating web page templates for use in the Division’s content management system.  Assists the ITS Director in assessing feasibility of projects, develops system prototypes, and has frequent interaction with designers and clients.  Other duties include a hands-on role in general maintenance, technical support, enhancement, administration, standards compliance and cross-browser, cross-platform testing of web-based projects as well as some systems maintenance.

Specific Duties

1.    Develop custom solutions in standard web programming languages that integrate with the Division’s content management system and meet end-user needs. (20%)

2.    Assist users with needs assessment and development of technical solutions to work-related problems. (15%)

3.    Provide technical support for specific technology projects. (15%)

4.    Develop and execute test plans for ensuring cross-browser and cross-platform interoperability. (10%)

5.    Create templates from supplied visual design, including markup and client-side scripting and image optimization. (5%)

6.    Evaluate and recommend vendor product solutions to departmental and Division business problems and provide integration between existing and new systems. (5%)
   
7.    Maintain appropriate documentation on support and business processes. (5%)
   
8.    Assist and/or participate in staff rotation to handle server administration tasks, on-call support for special projects, and user support requests. (5%)
   
9.    Create standards-compliant markup that conforms to W3C standards and US Government Section 508 accessibility guidelines. (5%)
   
10.    Collaborate frequently with visual designers to ensure visual designs can be executed to standards and with content and structure separated from presentation. (5%)
   
11.    Serve on University and Division committees and projects as appropriate. (5%)

12.    Other duties as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Requirements

Minimum earned Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, related field, or equivalent experience.  One to two years experience with web application development and Macintosh OSX or Linux/BSD/Unix systems administration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse customer base.  Strong oral communications skills, experience working in project teams and writing documentation for users of varying technical abilities.  Proven success in meeting deadlines, learning new technologies, attention to detail, and providing reliable work estimates

Specific Skills and Competencies

Required:
Significant experience with the PHP as well as good understanding of object-oriented programming and relational database concepts and products (MySQL or Oracle). Substantial skills in web markup and scripting languages (HTML, XHTML, XML, XSLT, and , basic CSS). Knowledge of software engineering concepts (requirements management, development models, testing and documentation). Basic Macintosh OSX or Linux/BSD/Unix systems administration skills.

Desired:
Familiarity with LDAP based directory systems. Ability to create web templates that separate content and structure from presentation.  Web user interface design and implementation.  Experience with other web technologies (RSS, XML-RPC, SOAP, AJAX, DHTML, page templating systems, Javascript).  Working knowledge of Web optimization techniques.  Experience with information architecture and usability testing practices.  Familiarity with Unix shell scripting.
